A Free iPod or Just a Bunch of Spam?

If you spend any time in forums you've seen the "Free iPod" posts. The basic premise is that you sign up for a bunch of stuff (affiliate based) and refer a bunch of your friends to do the same. It's what in the traditional business world it's commonly referred to as a pyramid scheme.

Out of sheer curiosity I went through the process a couple months back. I used my standard "send all your spam here" e-mail address. I noticed an increase in spam to that account but couldn't really tie it back to the free iPod promotion. I get so much spam there already it's hard to tell what spam came from where.

The free iPod post appeared in my sports forum and I decided to just let it be and see what happened. A member of the forum who goes by "Purple" did some controlled testing and posted the results of his test on page 3 of this thread.

The results, while not surprising, are pretty clear cut. If you try and get something for nothing, in this case a free iPod, you'll most likely get nothing but a huge influx of spam. My advice is to steer clear of these offers unless sifting through spam is a a hobby of yours.
Spammers…I hate em'.

(on a side note there's a somewhat humorous thread/poll in same forum, Dealing With Slime - Spammers. Cast your vote on how best deal with these jerks. )
